Mmmm....spaghetti sauce and peanut butter. You guys are going to be living the high life!

If you do lose power, hopefully your generator can keep the freezers running. Otherwise, you're going to be eating like kings every day (neighborhood bar-b-que!) for a few days.

Yeah.. I have heard you only need to run the generator an hour or two a day to keep the freezers cold if you dont open them too much. I need to double check that.
We also have a bunch of Mac & Cheese and canned fish (mostly tuna) , beef stew, chili, etc.

Also hopefully it will be cold enough out so we can store stuff in sealed buckets outside for a couple of days once they thaw.. we don'y have much by way of heating potential, but then again it doesn't get THAT cold in Virginia compared to where we lived before (Western NY state) so we can wer lot of clothes to stay warm.

shotgun, rifle, and handguns to protect it all (just bought more bullets fdrom Cheaper than Dirt), satelite internet to communitcate...

And then just hope it is a short quarantine :)

Here's something cool I discovered last winter. We lost power for about a day and that got me thinking about the freezer. You see, they tell you to keep the opening and closing of the door to a minimum - but you also need to check to make sure it's still cold enough.

We have one of those wireless thermometers - you put a little black box outside and then you have another box inside that tells you the temperature reported from the outside box. I found you could take the outside box and stick it in the freezer and enough of the signal could still get out to report the temp. Problem solved! No need to open the freezer to check.

That is a great idea.. i already have one of those, I used to use it before my BBQ pit was broken in as well as it is now (now it is sort of like fire it up and it sits at the right temp for hours)

Come to think of it, we also have several wired polder type thermometers.. the wires are thin enough where they should not be a problem to a good seal on one of our freezers (maybe on another though.. have to test this theory out) then we could have temps on all the freezers :)

Is mass stupidity one of the signs that the end of the world is near?

Seriously.. it is getting expensive to hold onto these puppies.

Hmm, maybe I will sell a case PLUS a free CCC entree and refried beans side :)
Who knew that MREs could be a profitable investment? ;)

I seriously have to stop looking at the MRE auctions so often. I just saw this one:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Case-A-and-Case-B-M ... dZViewItem

$190 Buy-it-now for two cases. Plus $30 shipping. I used to think the people that sold (tried to sell) for these prices were idiots. Now I think they're just opportunists. The real idiots are the people paying this much for them.

the real idiots

Kman, I have to admit that I may be selling off my collection of 11/04's if these prices continue. There is no reason that I can't sell 'em while they're high and come back later when all the idiots are flush with nice new '98 MRE cases.

I can always use my insane profits to buy up Mountain House and retort pouch tuna from Costco. $100 / case? Come on! That's great for those of us who have a stockpile. Let's unload and start the Mountain House website for a few months.

Yep, deanopilot, I have to agree. With idiots like this swarming out there, it'd be hard not to try to cash in on it.

I had been keeping my eye on a case of current LRRPs on ebay. The price was getting up there about an hour before the auction end - around $120. I was thinking of bidding just because I don't have any. But then I checked shipping via the shipping calculator. And it was $81!! Damn...talk about padding the shipping!
