Sorry, When I said I open mres prior to packing, I open the main pouch and grab what I want. I work for the US Army Corps of Engineers (civilian), and carry a blackhawk strike (day pack) at work for field use. Backpacking I use a Gregory 4500 in pack. Its way to big for 3 day mild weather trips, but I need the space for winter trips or Mountaineering. I agree with the group here, its up to the user to find his "sweet spot" with packs. I have bought and sold more packs than I can name till I found the right one. I keep a medium Alice pack for over nighters. I do not know how the deployed guys get all they need in an alice. Packing and planning is the hardest part for me.
Cheers.

Dave,
The ALICE pack has held its own since Vietnam. It has gone through some changes and nowadays the military has tried to mix with the civilian market. This first came about with the VECTOR packs in the late 80's and early 90's. Now we have the MOLLEE I and II pack systems. I have heard mixed reviews about the MOLLEE but it is supposed to be very accomadating and versitile when worn by the soldier. For backpacking I don't know if its very useful, but I would stil go with a civilan model. The civilians make more comfortable stuff. If you or anybody wants I can provide links to Israeli manufacturers that make backpacks, like I mentioned earlier. They make packs for the military that are practical and inexpensive.

BackPack?
A backpack is a back-mounted Sincgars carried by the RTO. If you mean rucksack, it all depends on the mission. Most quikie jobs only require a buttpack, unless your mechanized on BFV. Watch BHD. Theres lots of clues how the guys operated, even though it was a hollywood production. Carry extra dope and beer! No Sheitte!
