MRE and Hurricane Relief
Hi truzoom. A couple of things: MRE only contain approximately 1300 calories per meal. An active person could eat the full three MREs per day but a less active person could probably get by on two. I don't know about just one...I mean, if that's all you had, sure - it would have to do.
As for giving out HDRs instead of MREs...two points there. First, they don't make HDRs in anywhere near the quantity they'd need for this relief effort whereas the MREs are already stockpiled in warehouses ready to go. Second..."fitting because not everyone is going to be a meat eater"?? That's what the vegetarian MREs are for. HDRs are more about trying to produce a religiously/culturally/PC-acceptable ration. If you're so bad off that you need military rations air dropped on you, are you really going to let yourself continue to starve to death because you don't like meat or because you really, really, really will only eat "Lentil Stew"?

This gets me thinking and kman you probably know the answer to this. How many MREs are there available? I mean, between the war in Iraq and now the war against mother nature in MS, how in the hell many MREs are in the stockpile? I bet Ameriqual and Sopacko are churning those things out like you would not believe. And I imagine this is going to get us those 2005 MREs a lot quicker now as we are sure going to be getting through all of the 2004 inventory here pretty quick.
"THEY CALL ME DIRTY...DIRTYDAVE"
Found a report that police officers in New Orleans are eating MREs; figured you guys would want to see it. Besides that the page has all kinds of information and pictures straight from the city.

HERE IS THE POST FROM THE SITE JDAVIDB WAS REFERRING TO...THANKS FOR THE INFO! WELCOME TO THE SITE!!!
12:35 am Outpost Crystal's Police Officer
More from the Police Officer. I'm typing as fast as i can while he talks to us:
He's only hearing bits and pieces. The people in the city are shooting at the police. They're upset that they're not getting help quickly enough. The fireman keep calling because they're under fire. He doesn't understand why the people are shooting at the rescuers. Here it is 5 days ago the Mayor said get out of town and nobody went and now they're pissed.
The National Guard was at the Hilton, but now the Hilton is evacuated. When they said the CBD was gonna get 6 feet of water, it seems like everyone evacuated.
He turned the corner onto Canal Street and it looked like a flea market. People breaking into every store, going to the neutral gound (median) and trading and selling everything.
They broke into Winn Dixie Monday Night. Do they steal food? No. Cigarettes and liquor. Store was a mess. All the meats were going to waste so the districts went over there to salvage food for officers. Many cops have been eating MREs.
The Iberville Housing Projects got pissed off because the police started to "shop" after they kicked out looters. Then they started shooting at cops. When the cops left, the looters looted everything. There's probably not a grocery left in this city.
Over 30 officers have quit over the last 3 days. Out of 160 officers in his district maybe 55 or 60 are working. He hasn't seen several since Sunday. HQ is closed, evacuated. No phones to contact them.
"HQ, be advised, we're going 10 7."
"Ok, y'all coming back on???"
"We don't know."

Thanks for the welcome, Dirty Dave. I've been reading off and on for a month or so. My quick intro: just interested in MREs. I've never been in the military. I don't own a gun, but I respect and promote the right of everybody to do so. (My politics are libertarian.)
As an update on the New Orleans story, it looks like troops are now rolling into New Orleans with MREs:

Uh, I don't know quite how to respond to this. I certainly don't want to sound heartless toward starving people. But it's a little hard not to laugh or scoff.
Apparently, people are complaining because the MREs they are getting are cold.

I mean, listen, if they don't want them, they can bring them over here to Texas, because I would like to try them...

That's why we had a little trouble refraining from laughing. I've never yet had the pleasure of having an MRE, but my understanding is the flameless ration heater is labelled with the directions, right?DIRTYDAVE wrote:LOL, I guess no one has showed them how to use the heater that is enclosed.
If you read through the argument on the link I posted, somebody was suggesting perhaps the people were starving so much they weren't patient enough to read the directions. In which case, according to another poster, they should really be too starving to care about the temperature of their food.
