S.O.S. Emergency Ration

Post by Ceres » Wed Dec 26, 2018 1:25 am

Wasn't entirely sure where to post this so I thought it'd be best here.

Came into possession of an S.O.S. Emergency Food Ration. It doesn't feel wholly airtight because I can move the packaging around the bars a little, which makes me think the packaging was compromised.

Would this still be okay to eat or is it just a natural thing overtime? (mfg date 07/18, exp 06\23, lot # 3060? Hard to tell)

edit: IMGUR picture because the file failed to upload for some reason

Those have a pretty good fat content, so if the package were compromised they would likely go rancid, creating a noticeable odor when you open it. I think you would be able to tell right away just by the smell test after opening. The ingredient list in most of those is pretty simple, so there's no dairy or anything like that to go bad. Rancid will taste bad and is not necessarily harmful for you. Just give it the same test you would an old MRE (sight, smell, taste a small bite, etc.).

Also, some of those are wrapped inside of the outer packaging as well, so even if compromised, the bars might still be perfectly fine. To answer your question about whether it is normal, I would have to say no IMO. I use those in vehicle survival kits, and I've never had one feel like it has lost vacuum before. If you do open it, let us know what you find out. :)

If I find a good little resting spot for my phone then for sure, though quality won't be wholly guaranteed.

It was a little Christmas gift from my folks with them knowing I have a weird obsession weird MRE's so if it don't smell rancid still trying to figure out how to store the rest, maybe in a ziploc bag or something.

Don't notice a rancid smell coming from them when just smelling the package alone.
