MRE's at work in the Civilian world. A funny...

Post by Petej » Thu Jun 02, 2016 9:14 pm

This week has been nutz!

I had driven up to Kent, WA on Monday to drop my kids off with their mother (she's the custodial parent) and my intent was to stop somewhere and eat lunch (I brought an MRE with me for that purpose) at one of our many state parks on the way back. The stop never happened as I had got an emergency page from work asking (I was more or less Voluntold) if I was available to come in early..... An 8 hour day, turned into a nearly 16 hour day.

At some point during the night, I realized that I had forgotten a lunch (I forgot about the MRE at this point) and needed to to eat and with nothing appetizing in the coolers at work, I had decided to head out and grab something from the local store. When I got out to the Jeep, What did I spy with my beady little eyes? My forgotten, unopened, untouched MRE from earlier that day!

MKS saved my bacon that day!!!

Pork sausage Patty.... Definitely a good one.

I got weird looks from my most of my coworkers as I was prepping the FRH and getting everything ready on the hood of the Jeep. One of my coworkers (I found out that night, had retired from the Army reserves last week after 20 years, including a few tours) brought over his own MRE and ate lunch with me. I got to see an official, modern .Mil MRE. MKS is pretty close!

What is your experience with eating an MRE (Or similar ration) while at work out in the Civi world?

BTW, I have not served, but not without effort. I thank each and every veteran or anyone currently serving (in any form) for their service!

In 07 or 08 I sent a MRE pound cake and fruit cocktail in my oldest son's school lunch because it was the end of week we were out of snack cakes and granola bars. He had enjoyed the MREs on camping trips
I always pack him a sandwich, bar, fruit cup, drink, and cheese. So I thought he would not mind the pound cake or fruit (I am not sure what cake it was 100%) He was mortified and would not eat them, so his friends asked if they could have them.
He gave them away.
He complained bitterly to me and still brings it up.
My youngest son likes eating them on camping trips but he likes to pick his own meals.
But has mentioned don't pack them for my school lunch, only camping or hikes

As for me when I worked a construction project near a large river I brought a Mexican themed MRE (Rice/burrito) and cooked it on the bank with my Yugo Army JNA cook set at lunch break. My co workers did not think it strange as they thought it was merely 'camping food"

I'll be bringing more MRE's to work in the future. My coworkers think I'm kinda crazy for doing this. Tonight, I'm placing one on my desk just to get reactions now!

I ordered a case of Sopacko MRE's from the Epicenter yesterday. Lets try another supplier.

I always have a bunch of MREs in my locker but also carry a FSR sandwich, cocoa, coffee etc. with me in my duty bag. We never know, where the next call will bring us and how long this will take. (I was in the middle of nowhere for a WW2 bomb defusing for 7 hrs.)

We don't get that kind of fun at my worksite!

We do have building evac's though. Sometimes lunch is eaten while standing post at the evac meeting location....

my co workers are pretty familiar with them by now.

When im in the office I usually put the things i dont use in the break room and others gladly use it up, onsite people are always curious but i tend to get them quickly, too much to do onsite

Several times i have been asked for something and have broken out an mre accessory pack to save the day.

I broke out my lunch and ate it on the tailgate of the Jeep. I had the MRE on my desk all day, gathering looks from passers by....

Pork Sausage Patty with Wheat Snack bread. Good stuff.

Now, it's nap time before changing out the Unit Bearing on one side. Bad enough to feel like the wheel was gonna come off!
