MealSpec has come out with a new version of the FRH that not only gets hot enough to boil water, but stays hot for almost a quarter hour. AND is large enough to hold more than one item at a time. Not in MREs yet, but we can sure hope! See a first look here... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjSkQSViiws
Can't wait to try one of these out - especially for ice fishing.

cool bags....a bit pricier than standard ration flameless bags... about $2 per bag if you buy two dozen
Re: New Ration Heaters from MealSpec.
Thanks for mentioning this Rocky. I hadn't even thought of posting the video here. Since that first look video I managed to make one more. It was a cold weather test of the MealSpec bag on a morning when the temperature was in the low 20s. It had pretty much the same result as the first video. the egg was partially hard-boiled and partially soft- or medium-boiled.
Here's the second video for anyone interested:
I'm sure it would have been cooked enough to be edible, but I didn't try either of these eggs because I cooked them directly in the heater water. Wasn't sure if the shell would protect it from the stuff in the heater water. It would seem like a good idea to put the egg in a bag, or tin foil or something like that to keep it from the water. Overall I was quite impressed with these heaters. They're in sort of an in-between market--they are mainly advertising them as flameless ration heaters for MREs, but that doesn't really seem like their true best use. After all, an MRE entree is ready-to-eat and doesn't need to be cooked. These heaters generate enough heat to actually cook or sterilize something in an emergency situation. It's also an easier way to heat some water up to the boiling point (if for a short time) without having to start a fire. I'm hoping to make at least one more video about these heaters in the future looking at how effectively they heat up/cook a few other items. They are pretty cool, even if I don't know exactly what I'd consider their best use.
