Interesting finds, dude.
I have read somewhere that they will be doing away with the Beef Pot Roast W/Vegetables, and I think that royally sucks.
It is probably the closest thing I have ever had to my grandma's pot roast, and Lord rest her soul, that woman could really throw down in the kitchen. I think of her quite often, every day.
This being said, it is one of the few items in the MRE lineup that is done right. To open this up and have a meal that tastes like it was made in my grandma's crock pot is an immense morale booster, so when I head to the Knob Creek Machine Gun Shoot, I'll keep a lookout for vendors selling single meals and get as many as I can. Aside from this, I'm going to pick up six cases ( have to replenish long-term food supply. I wiped mine out over the winter due to hard times. Ah, but I ate well!!)
and see if I can't find some of these items on my end. Am really wanting to try the biscuits and gravy. Being raised on a Southern diet, I do love that stuff, so trying that out oughta be interesting.

Honestly, I think there should be more breakfast-type menus to include.
Psychologically speaking- and maybe I'm wrong here- I feel better having something like the Veggie Omelotte ( I actually dig them. The ham ones were far superior) when my day starts. It's a small piece of normality when you are out there humping all that shit from rally point to the next, or when you're out with the boys doing weekend Scouting. I mean, most people don't get up and scarf Chicken and Salsa for breakfast.

I also wonder why the manufacturers do not re-introduce some past menus from time to time. You would not believe the insatiable craving I constantly have for Pork W/ Rice In BBQ Sauce, and Ham Loaf with the Beans W/ Tomato Sauce.
A few months ago I opened my last pouch of the beans and the Four Fingers Of Death and the beans were not good and I had to throw it away.

Panzer,

I'm right there with you. I loved the Pot Roast. I had it the other day and it reminded me of some of the earlier MREs I used to eat.

I missed the ham and potatoe MREs from times past or even the simple ham slice. Talk about a good breakfast. Ham slice, pineapples, yum!

I've had the veggie omlette. Not bad. Not a favorite, but not bad. The Omlette with Ham was an old time favorite too.

Hello everyone,

Once again a new MRE item has come out that some of you may want to try. Last weekend I tried the newest breakfast item: Apple Turnover. Now some of you may think of the traditional apple turnover as sweet delicacy you would find at a county fair or a warm, tasty, light and flaky treat. Well, unfortunately this item is something totally different but at the same time something that looks familar.

The entree was made in February 2011. When I opened the pouch I really though it was a mistake somebody at the production line slipped in. What I thought was a traditional apple turnover was really a French Filled Toast pocket. So I figured I would have it anyway. The smell of cinnamon was very real and fresh baked bread. I was kind of wondering where the apples were on this thing until I cracked open the middle and found all of them there.

The apples were baked in the middle much like a Hostess Fruit pie without all the sugar frosting on top. I mean, exactly like a Hostess fruit pie. So after having this with some coffee and fresh fruit I came to the conclusion that it was much more than a cinnamon bun or a french filled toast pocket. This is far better! Not to mention that the pieces of apple were firm and crisp and the gelatin was not overly sweet or gooey like a pie topping.

For those of you who yearn for breakfast entree's in your kits or disaster relief stocks then this just might be a welcome addition. Or maybe just trying this out when your out hitting the trail or camping. It's very delicious with some coffee.

Treesuit,

Thank you for posting the Apple Turnovers pictures. I just ordered a bunch from Epicenter, as well as a bunch of other goodies. I love that website, crude layout but I get the goodies when I order them and at a good price.

My survival class was canceled last minute, I was gonna field test your FSR during the course. I have consumed two of them so far and gave one to a friend.

I did a 24 hour hike and camp that weekend because I had the time open on my schedule. I brought along one of my (your) FSR, man there is a lot of food in those. I ended up sharing some of the food with one of my hike buddies. I think you could easily extend that amount of food out over two day. Granted, it was a warm weather hike, 95-100 degrees or so, and I'm sure in colder weather it would be easier, and needed, to eat that much.

I hope to be hitting you up for more soon.

Thanks again.

Jaminphx,

Good to hear that you had a small chance to try out my FSIR's. Your right, when you open the packet there seems to be alot of food in there and eating over a 24hr time period may seem like forever. Trust me when your packing a rifle, helmet, body armor, and rucksack you burn through the calories and water in no time. It may not seem like a lot at first appearance but there's enough.

On a side note I for one have been caught short of food or water or both and let me say it was miserable. I would rather have a little more food to go on than have nothing. And, yes, in colder weather you'll consume more jsut to keep the calories up. Not so much in hot weather. Yeah, been to Death Valley, CA and a few other desert places where 95-100 degrees was early in the morning before 10 am. In those places you drink more water than anything.

I did see the apple turnovers at the Epicenter and I'll order some when I get some money. If you need more FSIR's I have some. Thanks 8)
