What companies co-manufacture MREs for weight loss programs?

Post by gsanders98 » Wed Sep 14, 2011 1:21 pm

Does anyone know what companies contract manufacture for these major weight loss programs?
1. Weight Watchers
2. Nutrisystem
3. Jenny Craig
4. Medifast

Also what types of products are contract manufactured for these companies (i.e. Weight Watchers Smart Ones is contract manufactured by Heinz, Schwan's Home Service manufactures frozen ready meals and ice cream products for Nutrisystem, etc)

Wornick used to produce some of the Nutrasystem retort products before they went Chap 11, don't know if they're still contracted for production. I know that Truitt Bros. Inc. is currently also doing some of the Nutrisystem retorts. You can track down the specific vendor for the various products (retort, canned, and frozen products that contain meat or poultry) by the EST Code that is printed on the packaging.

Thank you so much for this information MCIera, its very useful to me. I didn't know about EST codes before this - do all "retort, canned, and frozen products that contain meat or poultry" have an EST code associated with them? Do you know a website that I can go to for more information about the topic - or where I can go look up a code once I have it?

All meat, poultry, and egg products should have a EST code, though the fresh meat packaging that you find in a supermarket usually won't have it on the packaging (it is on the cryovac packaging that the store received the meat in.) This is USDA/FSIS (Food Safety and Inspection Service) info. You can see samples of EST indicia at http://www.fsis.usda.gov/Fact_Sheets/Fi ... /index.asp and you can view/download the current list of numbers from from http://www.fsis.usda.gov/regulations/Me ... /index.asp . The list is available in either PDF or .XLS format in either alpha or numerical order (I'd recommend numerical for your purposes.)
