chipotle...comes from the nahuatl "chipoctli" or "tzilpoctil"... "chi(li)( chile, pepper) +"poctli( smoked) and it means "smoked chile ( another word for pepper in mexican spanish!...)

Is simply smoked peppers. They can usedjalapeños,serranos, habaneros, red peppers and many other varieties. It was original from central and southern Mexico ,but since the popularity of mexican style flavors and foods in the U.S grew, the production and processing of jalapeños and other peppers moved up north close to the border....

the chipotle is simple a ripe jalapeño,it turns red in the vine loosing all of its moisture. Then you pick them up and smoke them....
I used to grow them and smoke a few at home...I learned the procedure from a mexican neighbor. :D You can smoke any type of pepper, any kind.

Peace!

I also get the red Jalapenos whenever I find them. Much nicer flavor than the green ones. I split and de-seed them, pop them in my smoker for three hours, then into my dehydrator for about 12 hours.
When completly dry, into an el cheapo electric coffee grinder they go.
Presto ! Chipotle powder, smokey and really not all that hot!
Way better than store bought !

I received 4 cases of the 2008 Sopako MREs about a month ago. All four cases had the same menus: Beef Enchilada, Pork Rib, Penne Pasta, Cheese Omelet, Grilled Chicken, and Spaghetti. In comparison to the 2006 MREs I used during and after Ike came through, I found the following differences:

Two of 24 2006 MREs had peanut butter and snack bread while the other 22 had jelly and crackers - The 2008 MREs are the opposite... Almost all of them have peanut butter and snack bread

None of the MREs have any kind of fruit side dish. Most of the side dishes are Fried Rice... A few have Mexican Style Rice Corn or Refried Beans.

The Sqwincher is blue in 2008 MREs, red in 2006 MREs

The brown military spoon has been replaced by a pale yellow spoon, larger spoon with shorter handle.

Everything else is pretty much the same as the 2006 MREs.

It's understandable that after all of the MREs in stock were shipped out due to the hurrcane season, the new cases would contain whatever was available. No complaints here, but it would be nice to substitute the pork rib with something else... some people don't eat pork.

EMROG4622, are you sure you're not describing Sopakco Sure-Pak civilian MREs? Those usually come with 6 menus as opposed to the 12 in military MREs. Also, based on how all the MREs sound like they have same spreads, sides, etc., they don't sound like the military MREs.

They sound like sure-paks because of the palish yellow spoon and the skencher drink.

Sorry about that... I was describing Sopakco Sure-Pak civilian MREs. The 2006 batch I had before did have the brown military spoons. The yellow spoon included in the 2008 MREs works just as well.
