The canister

That canister your referring to was for carrying the German soldaten gas mask. Rations were carried in a brotbeutel (bread bag) which is kind of like haversack from the American Civil War. Hope that helps. :)

MRE development

I am thinking along the lines of reorganizing the MRE like the Canadian IMP or the old K Ration. Have separate menus for breakfast/lunch/dinner. Have breakfast type foods included such as sausage patty, ham steak, eggs, omelets, pancakes. With the retort packaging, I think its all doable. Then with ...

WWII MRE

I checked the linked ebay page and he has at least changed the description from WWII to "vintage." Vintage being probably early 90's late 80's. He may not even know what he had because based on the other stuff he was selling, he's not really into militaria all that much.

British 24 Hr Ration- Where to Buy

I wanted to let folks know that if you are looking for a British 24 hr ration, they can be found at www.surplusandoutdoors.com/ishop/877/shopscr408.html. They seem to have a good selection right now but it varies from time to time. The price is a little steep at 10 pounds a piece and I'm sure the sh...

The cases (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) I've got all have 2001 dates and I would say they are 50/50 between Freddy Chef and Wornick productions. Either maker, they are still good entrees.

I hope they do a better job with the egg than the Canadians did with the omelette in their IMP's. That thing is just plain nasty!

An MRE is not an MRE without that old standby of tabasco. I hope that they get enough input from the field to reinstitute the tabasco bottle in all the menus. Its good stuff! Also, I also agree about the country captain chicken. One of the worst entrees I have tried. Definitely needs to be replaced....

Lung in a bag describes the omelette pretty well. Looked awful, but presentation is not exactly any MRE requirement so I was going to give it a try. Had one bite and threw the rest out. Research team definitely needs to go back to the drawing board on that one. Just tried the beef ravioli today. Ver...

The old C-rat

I remember my Dad who is a retired Marine, bringing tons of MCI's and components home all the time. The cabinets under the sink were filled with those old OD cans. The only things I can remember eating were the peanut butter (which always had a layer of oil on top that had separated) and the old por...

Canadian IMP's

I have been testing out the Canadian IMP menus as I have a case each of breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There not too bad if a little bland. Add your own tabasco and they really get better! So far I have tried the Chicken Casserole, Ham in mustard sauce, sausage and hash browns, and the omelette w/sal...
