MRE Meal Pkg.

It is kind of interesting- recall the 1980s packaging was a fair bit more substantial. They used a heavy outer cardboard sleeve on the box. This eventually went away. Boxes are still heavy duty, though a bit thinner. One of the requirements for rations is air drop capability on pallets. If they can ...

Type I, II, or III

The Type II or Type I was the real deal as far as I’m concerned. Very finely powdered. Anecdotally, I purchased the Sbux “Via” on user reports and my first impression was “OK for freeze-dried”. My second impression was it reminded me of late MCI or the MRE Type II coffee! When I was a troop I needed...

2003 Menu 17 Beef Teriyaki

Makes ya wonder, doesn’t it? Some items are fantastic, and discontinued. Some items are … not so good, and stick around forever.

1993 Menu No.6 Frankfurters, Beef Review

There were “improvements” to the Four Fingers of Death entree somewhere along the way. The earliest exemplars in the 1980s issue, they were pale in color and decidedly less appetizing, at least in appearance. Notice the rich Corinthian leather exterior color in your pic. They weren’t too bad, but I ...

Pork Sausage with Gravy

Tonite made a little experiment with a package of frozen Pepperoni in the freezer. Too lazy to make pizza dough, I surmised first that the MRE Tortilla are pretty tasty when fluffed up in a red hot cast iron. Pepperoni and Tortilla sounds strange, no. What else we got. Maybe that the MRE snackbread ...

British 24 Hour Ration Oatmeal

What kind of Oats did you use?

I’m betting “pre-cooked rolled oats” is a mis-translation along the way, somewhere. Try “Old Fashioned” rolled oats.

MCW

I meant once it gets out to the individual units … rations are kept in humid, non-climate controlled areas This is true! They didn’t keep my ass in a climate controlled warehouse either. MRE’s keep pretty well, it’s actually below freezing that will ruin them quicker than anything. Inexpensive vege...

MCW main meals

The 3-year period is probably due to the sides and such and not the main, and also because the military is not the best at storing anything DOD does a great job of storing everything. They pretty much wrote the book on preservation and storage, mothballing, test inspection dates and the rest of it ...

Someone ran to NK

Hopefully, he will have access to YouTube, and we can (finally!) get some reviews of the North Korean field rations. Steve1989 has been remiss in this regard, frankly.

“Nice! Let’s get this out on to a tray”
