Re: Rations of the Wehrmacht, SS and ordinary Germans

I have ordered the milk chocolate version, but it has yet to arrive, as it is coming from the United Kingdom. I think it will be very delicious.

I thought the chocolate ration that was the only thing those with dysentery could tolerate was a Hershey's Tropical Bar?

Re: U.S. MREs

I think the gum that we got in the MCIs was better, not sure why. There are probably more rumors and gossip about the MRE gum than you could shake a stick at, some of the more popular ones pertaining to how it will nearly instantaneously relieve constipation if chewed in sufficient quantity, or vic...

Re: U.S. MREs

I guess I forgot how bad Europe had it after WW2. That would account for the lack of surviving rations, given that 20 million people died of starvation in the war itself, accounting for 1 out of every 3 casualties of the war. I would love to try my hand at making recreation WW2 rations. I would not ...

Re: Rations of the Wehrmacht, SS and ordinary Germans

WW2 was just a mess for all involved. No one was better off for all the death and sheer cultural destruction it caused. Regardless, today, my Scho-Ka-Kola arrived. A nice tin with two layers of bite sized caffeinated chocolates. I ate a piece and the flavor was of dark chocolate, a bit more bitter t...

Re: Rations of the Wehrmacht, SS and ordinary Germans

My travel plan includes going into the other European countries as well, as I am going to see the concentration camps and other Nazi related sites, such as where the Nuremburg Rally was held, for myself. I was born in Nuremberg (Nürnberg) Have a look at Thrid Reich in ruines . See WW2 places and bu...

Re: U.S. MREs

So really what you wise folks are telling me is that what I really need to do is go out and purchase a ton of different MREs and then have a taste testing field day thread, with lots of pictures and opinionated statements in regards to preparation ease and flavor? I like that idea! If you order all...

Re: Things that you HATE/DON'T LIKE in MREs?

Walnettos were a popular candy in the United States prior to 1940.

They are supposed to look like that, but they are supposed to taste good. I'm sure that the oil in the nuts must have spoiled them.

If you get them fresh, they are actually a really pleasant candy.

Re: Rations of the Wehrmacht, SS and ordinary Germans

If I know anything about history, German civilians in major cities were down to eating leather, wallpaper, and sawdust the last years of the war. Farmers may have had a it a bit better, but not much. By the end of the war, their last horse was probably only a memory. I'm a Vietnam War veteran, and ...

Re: Rations of the Wehrmacht, SS and ordinary Germans

Hi Schokakola....great stuff in itself!!! I'd advise getting a copy of Vol 1 and/or 2 of "Rations of the German Wehrmacht in WW2" by Jim Pool. Its a super book packed with illustrations and text about all you've described and more. It will give you much insight into the packageing processes and des...
