Re: 2015 Menu 14 Ratatouille - The name is a lie
I may have been one of the few who liked it. It wasn't #1 on my hit parade, but it was one I enjoyed. In general, I think they put extra effort into the veggie meals.

Re: Meet Up Poll
Just for the sake of shorter travel for everyone, somewhere in the middle of the US (I apologize to our non-US members like housil) like Kansas City would be smart. Just not some high-crime city like Memphis or St Louis. I don't know who might host it or arrange all the gazillion details, though.

Re: Meet Up Poll
I attended last time and enjoyed it very much. I gave the FRH demo, which is still on video somewhere here on the site. I'd have to fly in again to make the next one, and would consider it.

Re: MRE Cracker perforations, anyone ever gotten these to work right?
As we used to say in Vietnam, "You get shot at every day and you're worried about what something in your food might do to you in 20 years?" I think the Army loses sight of the big picture sometimes. They take trans fats out of crackers to "protect" soldiers who would eat nothing but pepperoni pizza ...

Re: Vietnam -- 1965 Survival, Escape, And Evasion Kit, Individual, Airman's, Type Seek-1 Containers 1 and 2 Matched Pair
I flew 300 combat missions in Vietnam and never heard of such a thing. On the other hand, I flew covert (spook) missions over Cambodia, where "escape and evasion" would have been impossible. Issuing such a kit to me would have been pointless. Do you have any idea what kind of aircrew got these? The ...

Rocky's Tip: Use 2/3 the recommended water, and slowly pour the food into the water, not the other way around. No dry pockets or excessive stirring that way. Add water towards the end of the soak period, and only if needed.

Re: The multitudes of uses for MRE pouches
That video was of my FRH presentation at the MRE get-together a few years ago. I covered the salt trick, the food flip, and the mylar oven tip. Lacking a mylar oven you make yourself, the MRE outer bag is a fair substitute. I don't have a link to the video because I wasn't the camera guy. Edit to ad...

Re: The multitudes of uses for MRE pouches
First, of course, you use the outer bag as an oven to heat everything. Put the activated FRH inside, then your main, side, and whatever else around (never IN) the FRH. Flip the pouches over when half done to get even heating.

So the difference is that the Wornick one contains high fructose corn syrup in addition to the other ingredients, huh?
