Re: U.S. Jimmy Dean
I don't know why they call this thing as "Jimmy Dean". It is not similiar to other military rations. But this is issued to U.S. Soldiers. When they first showed up (late? 90s), the sandwich component was made by the Jimmy Dean company -- I think either turkey or ham w/cheese on a hamburger type bun...

I bid on one. Did not fight the good fight as the price went up.

Re: 1993 Brown Bag Corned Beef Hash
Corned Beef Hash and particle board Oatmeal Cookie Bar in one review . . . makes me both nostalgic and hungry. Amazing to see how well that MRE held up. I enlisted in '93, I think it was in overall better condition than I am . . .

Re: Swedish peacekeepers demand additional rations
MREs and their counterparts aren't intended for protracted feeding, both in terms of cost and palatability, so there'd always be a need for some sort of hot A's. If the UN's claim the daily food ration was 3900 calories, it sounds like the cooking or ingredients (or both) were badly substandard befo...

Re: PackIt Gourmet Meals
Dehydrated, water required, for their meals -- if you're familiar with Hawk Vittles, they're sort of a similar niche and product format. Relatively small operation, producing more interesting or at least different options to Mountain House and the other big backpacking food places. (This niche marke...

Re: PackIt Gourmet Meals
I really like the Packit Gourmet meals, use them as a change of pace from Mountain House when hiking.

Re: Menu No. 4 Country Captain Chicken full review WITH PICT
I wanted to like it -- it's supposed to be a variation on chicken curry (and supposed to be served over white rice, which is why Natick included noodles instead in the MRE
), but the execution of the MRE version just missed some aspect of what should be a winner.

Re: New US Ration I've Never Seen Before On Ebay!
Look like they are new this year? Seems like a pretty good idea in both the Hot and Arctic/High Altitude versions. Complete agreement on the eBay price being ridiculous for what it is.

Re: The deeper I dig......
The Joy of Field Rations blog is really great -- I just wish the author would post some more recipes. I've tried some of the recipes there and have to say some were great and some . . . acquired tastes. As for the matches going away, that's fairly odd. Probably is an artifact of a decade + of war in...
