PORK-FREE MRE

Post by laughing_man » Wed Jun 13, 2018 4:47 pm

I found the following PowerPoint document.
http://www.militaryfood.org/s/S17_Sessi ... llier.pptx
I got to know for the first time about "PORK-FREE MRE".
Does someone have the further information?
PORK-FREE MRE
Item is “Case A” of standard MRE NSN (menus 1-12)
  • Is not Halal/Kosher
  • Purpose was to provide an Operational Ration that could transit countries that prohibit pork products
  • NSN (8970-01-623-9560) established March 2014

Thanks! Very interesting. Never realized some countries wouldn't allow pork products into the country, even if for US use only.

Looks like this is still in the solicitation phase vs. production. Very interesting though!

Although the link of the first post was a document of 2017, the information about contracts was indicated on the document of 2016.

I am curious as to why this would even be a thing when a line of halal rations already exists???

Or is it the laws in certain countries require rations with absolutely zero pork content, whether meat or byproducts?

I imagine that Pork-Free MRE is what has packed the existing MRE components. Additional cost may be small...
And Pork-Free MRE may be a result of diplomatic negotiations with specific countries.

The existing line of halal mres already satisfy the conditions of "pork-free" as it is so exactly why this is even a thing baffles the mind....

Its like issuing a requirement/quotation for meat-free mre when there already exist vegetarian mres....

Reinventing the wheel?

Hallal ration is the ration for Muslim.
Why do the soldiers who are not Muslims have to eat hallal ration?

Not only the vegetarian menus but the menu of beef or chicken is "PORK-FREE".

"PORK-FREE MRE" isn't a re-invention of a wheel assumedly.
I think that it's only the combination of the existing items.
