NVA-Ration K-Portion

Post by housil » Wed Jan 14, 2009 2:42 pm

After I found the Holy Grail, I was looking for a real challenge

NVA former East German Army, called Nationale Volksarmee ration
Image
called K-Portion
"K" is for the east German (Russian) word "Komplekt".
As there was no (west) German word for Komplekt, there is also no English one.

They came in this boxes
Image
of four (kidney shaped) rations

There have been two different types
K-Portion/1 and /2
Image
The difference was just the entrees and the pates.

Packing list taped to each box
Image
Note the to be used at bottom, not printed but perforated numbers 17 8 91 = Aug 17th 1991
Also the shelf life of just 26 month

Pates:

Onion-liver pate
Mortadella

Image
Tea

Image
Chocolate

Image
Accessoires packs with solid fuel, water purifying tablets, matches

Image
Salt (the only item with russian letters)

Image
Canned bread

All items seemed civilian, even the pates have still the "recommended sales price" printed on.

Rudi (jubifahrer) and me opend the (bulky), expired 1991 cannes of entrees and pates.

He or me will post the pic´s later. Less worse than expected

Image

Opend Schmalzfleisch pate pork w/ gravy expired 1991. Smell was still OK, can not bulky

Image

Image

Entree green beans w/ potatoes and beef, bulked can, noise of air escaping while opening. Very suspicious, sour smell, spoiled for sure

Image

Image

Entree yellow peas w/ potatoes and bacon, can not bulked, smell ordinary,

Image
After removing the contents from the entrees, you could see and smell that the acid from the dish had reacted with the can surface. Inedible I guess after that
Modern way of Torgau, east meets west

Unsuspicious 2nd Schmalzfleisch pate

Image

Image

Shrinked inside the can pate, very nasty smell, spoiled for sure

Genuine sealed and packed in foil K-Portion right before opening by Rudi

All the rations looked very well and we opened everything very carefully.

also we used for the cans a tupperware safety can opener.

Note bulky cans

Image
Lentiles w/ potatoes and bacon, smell was normal "sour" lentil flavor

Image
Some beef with noodles, very liquide sauce, the "orange balls" are the seperated fat

EAST GERMAN RATIONS!!!!!!!!!!

Sweet, where did you find them?

Best before date 1991, The Borders opened November 9th 1989, must have been one of the last rations made, Germany reunified 3rd Oct 1990... No NVA after that.

Gaz, I´m collecting rations for over 25 years now. Lots of patience, research and a little pinch of luck

See the genuine written advise I got with them. Written in 1989, valid from 01.01.1990

You are right, very last issue.

The reason why they areso rare is, when East Germany felt apart in 1990, they have sent most of the NVA rations as an aid (or revange - who nows  ) to Russia as they had a winter deseaster in 1989/90.

This are the most NVA K-Portion pictures at the whole www I bet 8)

Pinch of luck is right, all I have seen for sale is the Iron Rations (compressed biscuit type in a small metal tin, E-portion I think).

Its the most photo's I have seen, I have seen a few on various websites but most are the same ones over and over again also there is very little information on them, I searched in English and German using google.de and found very little.

Revenge sounds about right :D The border guards (Grenztruppen) had the best deal, a field canteen with food being brought to you in large boxes that kept the food warm( similar to the US ones, the name I cant remember)
