1945 RAF Emergency Flying Ration MK lll

Post by steve1989 » Fri Mar 09, 2018 7:09 am

This is a British Royal Air Force Emergency Flying Ration MK lll.

It weighs 5 1/2 oz - this sleek little tin would be part of a more comprehensive bailout kit that contained water, a carrier for the water, a signal mirror, and a few other essential items.

The MK lll is primarily quick absorbtion carbohydrates in the form of barley sugars, peppermint chewing gum, and bitter malted milk toffee.

It has a small (cellophane?) bag with basic instructions on the components of the ration and use of the bag which is to protect the components from moisture.

This ration has a vial of 20 count Energy Tablets.
These are likely Benzedrine Sulphate.

Imagine the dire situations where these tablets were used?

Now i also wonder, what other rations had "go pills"?

The barley sugar is easy to chew - bites in like candy corn. It tastes strong of mollasses. It is one of the most delicious candies.

Those malted milk toffees stimulate your saliva glands. Bitter and hardly sweet - an appetite surpressor. There are 42 total.

This ration if used properly would give you energy and keep you awake for 4 days. Approx 10 tabs of these per day, 1 barley sugar, 2 gums.

Up to a week maybe even 8 days if stretched.

I will elaborate more on the ration later - but for now here are pictures.
