Some vintage US group ration cans/trays with tiny holes

Postby mreheater72 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 2:45 pm

Hi guys,

a couple of weeks ago I opened some vintage US group ration cans and trays with tiny leaking holes:

• FRANKFURTERS CANNED WHOLE (Can)
• BEANS IN TOMATO SAUCE FLAVORED WITH BACON (Tray Ration)
• CHOCOLATE PUDDING (Tray Ration)

All rations were stored in my basement, I cannot remember that the containers leaked when I was stocking them, beside the pudding. I opened the containers in a corn/grain field near my home, so I had no problem with disposing the contents of the rations :) .

No I want to show a review with photos of that stretching event :D :

Let´s begin with the FRANKFURTERS:

Upper lid of the can "FRANKFURTERS CANNED WHOLE" packed by BRIAN BROTHERS PACKING CO.. The finish is in a bad condition, also some heavy dents are apparent
Image

Close-up of the printed code "FD48" no idea of the meaning and the age of the can. Do you have?
Image

Close-up of a heavy dent of the can at the rim, here the can is leaking through a tiny hole
Image

Side-view of the can, see the rust and the dents
Image

Another side-view of the can, see the rust and the dents
Image

The bottom lid of the FRANKFURTERS can
Image

That photo was shot after opening the can with a P38 can opener. The condition of the 19 little FRANKFURTERS is surprisingly good :o , I expected some black spoiled sausages with very bad smell
Image

Close-up of the FRANKFURTERS
Image

Another close-up of the FRANKFURTERS, the smell was ok
Image

The FRANKFURTERS out of the can, the white matter you can see is cold fat
Image

Another view of fhe FRANKFURTERS out of the can
Image

View into the empty can, no corrosion, all ok
Image

Close-up into the can, here you can see the leaking point from the interior of the can
Image

The next day all FRANKFURTERS were lost, so at least a fox or some other animal get happy with that nice meaty meal  .

The next ration I opened was a tray with "BEANS IN TOMATO SAUCE FLAVORED WITH BACON", see the pics:

Top side of the tray ration "BEANS IN TOMATO SAUCE FLAVORED WITH BACON" packed by VENICE MAID CO., INC.
Image

Here the code printed on the ration, I guess "1086" means day 86 of 1991, according to that late March 1991
Image

Again the code "1086" printed on the lid of the tray in blue color
Image

The bottom side of the tray ration
Image

Printing on one side of the tray ration
Image

Here the tiny hole in the container
Image

Close-up of the leaking hole
Image

The opened tray ration, perhaps with the P38 :D
Image

Close-up of the contents of the ration, the beans and the sauce look ok, the bacon had turned dark
Image

Close-up of a bacon-piece
Image

Another close-up of the "BEANS IN TOMATO SAUCE FLAVORED WITH BACON"
Image

The empty tray ration container, the white inner finish looks ok
Image

Here the tiny hole seen from the interior of container. It seems that the corrosion of that tray ration containers arise from the interior

Now the last of the three vintage US group rations I opened: For dessert tray of "CHOCOLATE PUDDING"

The lid of the "CHOCOLATE PUDDING" tray ration packed by E. HUTTENBAUER & SON, INC.
Image

The code printed on the lid: "8236" for the day 236 of 1988 or "1102" for the day 102 of 1991?
Image

The bottom side of the ration, at the left upper corner there is a heavy dent that obviously causes a tiny hole for leaking
Image

The printing "CHOC. PUDD." on one side of the tray ration
Image

One rim of the can shows also some leaking
Image

Here the tiny hole and also a leaking rim
Image

Close-up of the tiny hole in the container
Image

Opening the tray with the P38, here you can see the leaking pudding because of pressure in the container
Image

Same as before, close-up
Image

The opened tray ration with the "CHOCOLATE PUDDING", not really appetizing… :)
Image

Close-up of the pudding, you can see the mess, happily I opened it at a field and not in the kitchen… :)
Image

Another close-up of the pudding with very liquid texture, but the smell was fine like chocolate :)
Image

The empty tray ration container, the white inner finish looks ok
Image

The tiny hole in the container because of the heavy dent
Image

All ration contents (beside the pudding) were lost the next day, some animals ate them with pleasure for sure  .

All in all the ration contents were in good condition, although all the showed rations were leaking… :o

First of all, I´m very sorry about that lost...

Great pictures and you are a "freak" again opening all the T-18 with a P-38  I did it once and ruined all my fingers and nails

Once a year I controll all my stockings as I have had some spoiled containers too and doesn´t want them to "explode" into my basement

No problems with the P38, it is always fun to me to use that brilliant little tool :D .

I watched that problem with the tiny holes in vintage metal trays also by other containers (Ham Slices, Omelete with Ham) in the past :( . It seems that that holes appear in each tray ration; it is only a question of time :( :!:

You are right, it is crazy that those sausages are in that perfect condition even with a hole in the can :o :!:
