FOOD PACKET SURVIVAL GENERAL PURPOSE Date Packed 9125

Postby mreheater72 » Sat Dec 25, 2010 3:55 pm

Hi guys,

today I decided to open a FOOD PACKET SURVIVAL GENERAL PURPOSE packed by the OKLAHOMA LEAGUE FOR THE BLIND with the date code 9125 which I decipher as meaning it was manufactured on the 125th day of the year 1999 (May 5, 1999).

The contents are:

• SHORTBREAD BAR (2)
• GRANOLA BAR (1)
• CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR (1)
• CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR (1)
• WINTERGREEN TABLETS (1)
• ICED TEA DRINK MIX (1)
• INTSTANT CHICKEN FLAVORED BROTH (1)

Now the photos:

The constituents still in card board:

All constituents at one glance reverse side:

Opened sachet of SHORTBREAD BAR, reverse side, with date code 9028 (January 28, 1999):

Close-up of the SHORTBREAD BAR, the taste was in my opinion even 11 years after packaging very good :D , very characteristical for US ration desserts, perhaps a little bit dry:

The remaining constituents I will open the next days and show some photos here… :)

Those are the new ones. The cereal/shortbread bars are meant to be that dry since they are a survival food.
I assume is to bulk you up after drinking some liquids...
I have some of the old "tin cans" made in the 1990's and beleive me they are still good after 20+years!!!

Hi guys,

now the pics of the CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR, I ate it that late afternoon :) :

Opened pouch of CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR, front side made by STERLING FOODS, INC.:

Opened pouch of CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR, reverse side with date code 6058 (February 27, 1996). So the bar was about three years old as it was packed into the FOOD PACKET SURVIVAL GENERAL PURPOSE with the date code 9125 (May 5, 1999) :?: :?: :?: :!: :!: :!: But that could be right because of the grey color of the pouch, that of the other ones is tan:

Close-up of the CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR, looks good, even so the taste was slightly strange, but it was edible :)

Happy Christmas Hagen! :D Very clear pics as always.

Does it give the total calorie amount for the ration anywhere?

^My thoughts, too. Is that packet supposed to be for one day, or just one meal?

Also Happy Christmas Simon :) !

Corresponding to "NATICK PAM 30-25, 3rd edition" the total calorie amount of the FOOD PACKET SURVIVAL GENERAL PURPOSE is 1447 kilocalories (5 % protein, 39 % fat, and 56 % carbohydrate). But here are the following constituents mentioned, they differ a little bit from the FPSGP introduced here:

• SHORTBREAD BAR (1)
• GRANOLA BAR (1)
• CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR (2)
• CHOCOLATE CHIP DESSERT BAR (1)
• WINTERGREEN TABLETS (1)
• ICED TEA DRINK MIX (1)
• INTSTANT CHICKEN FLAVORED BROTH (1)
• SUGAR (1)

Here the PURPOSE corresponding to "NATICK PAM 30-25, 3rd edition":

“The Food Packet, Survival, General Purpose is used by the Services to sustain an individual in survival situations, including escape an evasion, under all environmental conditions, and when potable water is limited. Requested by the Air Force, it is used to sustain personnel in any survival situation for periods less than 5 consecutive days.”

Thanks for posting these pics MREheater it's alot of fun. I remember I picked up one of these back in 2002 when i was like 13 at my local army & navy store for $12 and I snacked on it while playing that old-school Fallout on the PC. Good times! :D

By the way I saw one of these on ebay a few days ago it still might be on. I type in EVERYTHING keyword to find mis-listed titles and whatnot on rations. I think it was correctly titles though as Food Packet Survival.
What is the oldest thing you've ever eaten?

Hi guys,

today I will show the third type of bar out of the FOOD PACKET SURVIVAL GENERAL PURPOSE, a CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR.

Opened pouch of CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR, front side made by STERLING FOODS, INC.:

Opened pouch of CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR, reverse side with date code 9022 (January 22, 1999):

Close-up of the CORN FLAKES CEREAL BAR, the taste was very good :D , a little bit sweet, otherwise hard to describe. I ate it without the option of rehydrating mentioned on the pouch:
