Gluten Free MRE options?

Postby cosmo7809 » Wed Aug 16, 2017 6:39 pm

Hello all, I am a lurker of the forums who finally decided to make an account to ask a question or two and possibly do some shopping in the B/S/T section.

Recently my girlfriend has taken interest with me in regards to preparedness for emergency food prep. Because she is gluten free(not by choice) our options can be limited when it comes to certain foods. We do have a generous stock of dehydrated foods from mountain house and wise foods that are gluten free but I would like to add some MREs for emergency food prep and even when we go on a hike.
Ive done some searching inregards to gluten free MREs and I havent found much.

From what I've gathered it seems like I wont find a completely gluten free MRE but some items contained within such as peanut butter and nut mix probably are.

Since you guys have a tremendous wealth of knowledge I'd figure this is the place to ask.
Thank you for any help, Chris

Hey Chris, you won't find any gluten free options, only because everything has some type of wheat in it. Even the one's the US gives out to third world countries, although containing no animal products it still has breads and crackers. I suggest if it really means that much, put together your own improvised MREs with canned food and shelf stable products. Also some people might be able to custom make MREs for you but I don't know who would be able to make it in bulk. Sorry buddy, hope this helps!

If I remember right, we had that question before. The answer was, if you have a gluten intolerance, you aren´t fit for military service anyways so that´s why there aren´t any gluten free rations.

I have considered assembling some of my own MREs and as I walk down the isle at the supermarket I do try and look to see what could be some good contenders.

I did google search gluten free MRE and read an article(https://www.glutenfreeliving.com/gluten ... ghanistan/) where a member of the US armed forces who has a gluten intolerance basically is let to his own devices to figure out what to eat. I do recall seeing in the article that anyone with celiacs disease is disqualified from the recruitment process but like anything else people can fall through those cracks.

Thanks for the replies.

Such people wouldn't fall through the cracks long, either at the final processing before basic training or during the first day or two actually at basic training.

It's true that it would be a "disqualifying condition", though I know a handful of people who are gluten intolerant in the service. And, they are in fact pretty much on their own--if they pressed the issue, it would probably result in a medical-board discharge. However, I would hazard a guess that the people in question probably developed those intolerances after joining, as they're in their 40s and 50s. I went on my last deployment with one, was asked to pick up some chow--then was presented with the list of things they couldn't eat. That was a one-time favor.
I'm using my computer's spare resources to help find cures for diseases, analyze astronomical data, render 3D animations, simulate new materials and run climate models--what is your computer doing? http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ Or ask me for help!
