First run of tan-colored MREs?!

Post by mreheater72 » Fri Apr 15, 2011 1:23 pm

Hi guys,

today I want to show two tan-colored MREs, which were packed by RIGHT AWAY FOODS :!: . I guess they belong to the first-run of tan MREs. There is no date code visible, but because of their appearance they are produced 1996.

MENU NO. 3 CHICKEN STEW
Note, there is no clue „U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY COMMERCIAL RESALE IS UNLAWFUL” or FRH advice.

Hi guys,

here is another MRE out of my collection, which seemed to be one of the first tan MREs, packed by CINPAC, INC.. Date code is 6079 (March 19, 1996). The latest dark brown MRE in my collection has the date code 5309 (November 1995), also packed by CINPAC, INC.. . See the pics:

MREHeater72,

I was wondering if this is the first year that the contractors starting putting more food in the MRE's? Norge had a topic not too long ago about the size of MRE cases and over the years and the size of the MRE's got more and more "bulkier" due to the amount of food in MRE's. Can you tell the difference between this first run tan MRE and a earlier dark brown MRE?

It might be that this is the first year the contractors put more food in the rations.

You know, a long time ago I bought one of these MREs at a camping store and it was beef stew (my first one; hence the name) and it was also missing the "gov property" warning as well. What was also strange was that there was no FRH inside. I wouldn't be surprised if yours were lacking the heater as well.

Maybe you got some "Menu C"-MREs?

Unfortunately I never opened a 1996 MRE, so I it is not possible for me to do a real comparison :( .

Corresponding to the "1996 MRE menu list" and the "improvement list" here are the major changes:

http://www.mreinfo.com/us/mre/menus-xvi-1996.html

http://www.mreinfo.com/us/mre/mre-improvements.html

scroll down to "MRE XVI 1996 Production (16 Menus)"

• The menus increased from 12 to 16
• The first time vegetarian menus appear
• New easy-open tan meal bag (peelable seal) with graphics
• Tan color of all constituent parts pouches
• Nutritional informations on each constituent

I guess housil is right. With the hint "Note, that there is no clue „U.S. GOVERNMENT PROPERTY COMMERCIAL RESALE IS UNLAWFUL” or FRH advice" I want to emphasize that the first run tan MREs are lacking of that clue in the same manner as dark brown MREs do.
