Action Meals FRH. Anyone have experience with these?

Post by Wookard » Thu Feb 17, 2011 5:23 pm

I finally had time to visit one of the oldest and last running Army Surplus Stores in my area. There was a pile of these Action Meal FRH's on the front counter and they had been reduced to $1 (Canadian) a piece. I purchased 5 as I had a few Canadian Military MRE's of Beans and Weiners.

I read some good things about their meal packs but not too much info on the heaters. it says 12 minutes for a meal to be fully cooked with these.

I hope to give these a try and will do a review in the coming future when I have a chance.

They have a shiny cover so it makes it hard to get a good picture. I will try to get one in better light so I don't need my flash.

I was also wondering about this type of FRH since I saw it pictured in Donald Cheek's review of Britain's new 12 hour ration pack:

I'd like to see a photo or scan of the instruction drawings on the front if anyone can post it.

They were covered back in 2005, but the link no longer works...

Finally gave them a try!

It took about 12 Minutes to fully heat up the MRE. Just as per instructions. I tried out one of my Pork and Beans for dinner. Damn tasty!

The steam inside is amazing. I can't believe how little water cooked such a big pouch!

All in all, for $1 and a free MRE, I would be very happy to have these with me in the field if I couldn't get a fire to boil some water. This was the first time I ever used a FRH and it was overly easy to follow the instructions.

Thanks, Wookard. That's just what I was looking for.

I see that you're supposed to lay these flat as they heat. You don't need "a rock or something".
