Don’t drink the dairy shakes. They might give you diarrhea.

Defense Department officials are warning all military personnel to temporarily avoid drinking dairy shakes found in Meals, Ready to Eat and Unitized Group Rations-Express because they might contain Salmonella.

“There is a remote chance that we might have some dairy shakes that could have some Salmonella,” Gerry Darsch, director of the DoD Combat Feeding Program, told Army Times on Wednesday.

That means that potentially there are about 12 million dairy shakes in MREs that could be affected, Darsch said.

Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause diarrheal illness in humans, according to the Center’s for Disease Control and Prevention website.

The Salmonella was detected in late June during routine testing of a single lot of dairy shakes, said Darsch, who became aware of the issue June 21.

The shakes in question affect MRE fieldings for 2008 and 2009, Darsch said.

The shakes are found in:

1) MRE menu number one: chili with beans; menu nine: beef stew; menu 21: tuna in a pouch; and menu 22: chicken and dumplings.

2) Menus one and nine will be found in MRE boxes marked Case A and menus 21 and 22 will be in MRE boxes marked Case B.

The dairy shakes are also part of six out of the eight Unitized Group Rations-Express menus, Darsch said. Darsch did not have the specific menus, or specific numbers of how many UGR-Es are affected but said personnel should not drink the dairy shakes in UGR-Es for 2008 and 2009.

Wow...and here I was thinking getting diarrhea from MREs was just a normal state of affairs. :-)

Here's another article on this.

Recall of Dairyshake MRE mix issued

Firm takes voluntary action after FDA finds salmonella at plant

By Bryce S. Dubee, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Friday, July 3, 2009

A militarywide recall has been issued for Dairyshake powders found in Meals, Ready to Eat (MREs) and Unitized Group Rations-Express (UGR-Es).

Plainview Milk Products Cooperative in Minnesota issued the voluntary recall after a Food and Drug Administration inspection found salmonella contamination on some of the facility’s equipment, according to an FDA news release dated June 29. Plainview sells its products to distributors and manufacturers who may then use them in their own products, and not to the general public, according to the release.

The dairy cooperative might have shipped nonfat dry milk, fruit stabilizers, whey protein, and gum products contaminated with the bacteria between June 2007 and June 2009, according to the Defense Supply Center.

People should not consume the Dairyshake powder rations and should destroy any Dairyshake powders contained in the meals.

The products affected by the recall are the vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and strawberry-banana flavors of the Dairyshake powder.

"The remainder of the MRE/UGR-E menu is consumable and should not be discarded/destroyed," a DSC news release said.

No illnesses have been reported from consuming the powder, and an investigation to determine the source of the contamination continues, the FDA said.

I came on here to warn all of you about the dairy shakes but you beat me to it. It appears I have plenty to throw out. I have some cases with 09 inspection dates, are these ok?
