Any Idea what these are?

Postby Big_jo » Sun Feb 07, 2010 4:52 pm

Hello all,

Just seen this on ebay; I really don't have any idea what it is though:

By the way, there is also these

If only I had the space to put them and the money to spare!

This are the boxes only (!) of the "old", brown MREs.

The boxes are not complete, the outer cardboard-cover is missing by both cases :!:

Another 'what is this' question.

I found this item:

BmHPqjBmkKGrHqEH-DEEtnHGY-GsBLe81vKSw_12.JPG

It's one of the older MREs in the brown plastic

Text on it reads
Ham and Chicken loaf. Bean component. Meal ready to eat. Menu No 2 Texas 78501

My question is - what does this date code mean?

At first I thought it would be 1978, but this is before MRE production, so is it a 1985 batch?

Thanks for your help, everyone!! :D

To me, its the zip code of the manufacturer in McAllen, Texas 78501

The date codes are 4 digits only. Ham and Chicken Loaf was in use from 1981 to 1987. You have to open the outer pouch to find any date code inside.

Hi Big_jo,

there are two possible years: 1986 or 1987, only here the Menu No. 2 HAM AND CHICKEN LOAF contained the BEANS WITH TOMATO SAUCE. Here the additional Menu number on the dark brown pouch with large ciphers is missing (I can not see it on the photo) so I guess the Date of Pack is 1986.

Ah yes the old brown bag MREs! I got severe food poisoning during desert storm from the turkey diced with gravy menu, seems they had a quality control issue in the late 80s but someone forgot to notify the right folks. Couple other people in my unit got sick as well from the omelette and the pork patty MREs. Thankfully I was in a medical unit to begin with but I must have lost 10 pounds in about 18 hours!
