Re: Old pork patty MRE

Widely despised, I had some previous experience with Oregon Freeze Dry products from hiking, so the FD pork patty didn't bother me. As I recall there was also a FD potato patty. I liked those too. The freeze dried fruits were pretty fancy for the time, and all the FD items were generally of high qua...

Re: Wheat Snack Bread

The "Wheat Snack Bread" was a solution in search of a problem. The calories are the same as crackers. Shelf stability is certainly no better, and arguably much worse, moldy snack bread is not unusual. But I've never seen or heard of a moldy saltine. Not to say it can't happen, just that I've never s...

Re: Pre flight ration?

"Bean Component".

Yeah, the "Beans In Tomato Sauce" were legendary. Jayzus. The problem was medical in the sense that aircrews or fighter pilots who had recently eaten that garbage and then experienced rapid elevation changes would be in for a world of hurt.

Re: Why not Ramen Noodles?

As I recall in the 1990s the Infantry guys and Rangers and snake eater types didn't care too much for MREs, at least weight wise. The loads those guys were required to carry in their rucks was insane. Trust Me. So Ramen was practically standard issue with them. No NSN, but there probably should have...

Re: Heating Beverage Bags in US MRE's

The beverage bags are one of those items that I doubt are hardly ever used by most for their intended purpose. They are good quality, strong material though, and VERY useful for waterproofing or storing whatever. Dirty socks, segregating garbage etc. All kinds of uses. I always save a few back for h...

Re: US MRE Menu #20 - Hash Brown Potato

Tried this one yesterday. It's a nice thought, but it wasn't a hash brown potato. More like a potato stew or soup, with pork. I guess it was supposed to be bacon. It's not bad, but it's definitely not anything at all like the name suggests.

Re: US MRE Menu #8 - Meatballs in Marinara Sauce (5278)

I looked forward to this one the other day, as in the past it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately the meatballs were nearly inedible in the latest iteration I tried. Insp/Test 3-18 They were tough as an old shoe. Sad.

Re: Pizza is Back

Does it taste like a Wheat Snack Bread with Cheese Spread and Tomato? I'm not a pizza snob, but lets be clear. A good pizza crust is what makes a good pizza (imo) and I'm ... skeptical. Great that they are trying, NATICK is something else.
