Re: US MRE Menu #20 - Hash Brown Potato

Tried this one yesterday. It's a nice thought, but it wasn't a hash brown potato. More like a potato stew or soup, with pork. I guess it was supposed to be bacon. It's not bad, but it's definitely not anything at all like the name suggests.

Re: US MRE Menu #8 - Meatballs in Marinara Sauce (5278)

I looked forward to this one the other day, as in the past it wasn't too bad. Unfortunately the meatballs were nearly inedible in the latest iteration I tried. Insp/Test 3-18 They were tough as an old shoe. Sad.

Re: Pizza is Back

Does it taste like a Wheat Snack Bread with Cheese Spread and Tomato? I'm not a pizza snob, but lets be clear. A good pizza crust is what makes a good pizza (imo) and I'm ... skeptical. Great that they are trying, NATICK is something else.

Re: 2007 Menu No. 12 Veggie Burger

I'm surprised to see Tabasco in the tiny bottles still. Do more modern (2010s) MRES use bottles? I'm pretty sure by then they made the switch to tabasco pouches. Also commercial Ketchup and Mustard are supplied in heavy vinyl pouches. Personally the special Vegetarian meals always sort of stuck in ...

Re: Type X Ration

Yes, I've been trying to square the text in that article, along with the buildup of the Normandy invasion and the secrecy around it. It sort of makes sense, except of course the fact that by 1944 everybody and their brother knew there was going to be an invasion, the only question was where, not if ...

Guess I'm way too cynical, they are probably overseas criminal cartels hijacking your computer and mining bitcoin.

Re: Canadian IMPs

There was an American shelf stable sandwich bread or small loaf bread issued for a while, I saw it one time in the field, at a mobile mess. They had a big box filled with them to pick up as we went through the line. It was packaged in that standard brown accessory pack material, and about the same s...

Re: Type X Ration

Yes, I surmised something along those lines .., but again what strategic advantage is there to removing the markings? Or put another way, what were they trying to hide, and who were they trying to hide that ... whatever it was ... from? I'm at a loss to come up with anything.

Re: MRE chocolate

Chocolate is good for morale, it always tastes good and always gets eaten, and is always included in military rations since time immemorial (and survival kits, polar expeditions and moon shots via Apollo etc etc etc) I think you're not thinking this through :D I think you'll find unsweetened Baker's...

Type X Ration

So why the need for secrecy and no markings of any kind? Did this extend to the contents as well? Strange! https://web.archive.org/web/20081025014022/http://qmfound.com/army_rations_historical_background.htm Type X Ration A "confidential" specification for Ration, Type X was issued early in 1944. 58...
