Re: MRE price questions and info.

I'm not sure what you're paying now, so I'm not sure what "cheaper" means. Here's a yardstick for you, though: brand new issue MREs are right at $8 in military commissaries, and TOTMs are about $5. That's true either singly or by the case.

Now THAT, sir, is how a review ought to be done. Fabulous photos, and excellent commentary.

I really like that meal, too. I usually get TOTMs instead of full MREs and find that I seldom finish even those. They always include coffee in TOTMs but with absolutely no way to even warm it. Dumb.

Re: Chow Hall details (Menus/planning)?

My last chow hall meal was at Ban Me Thuot, Vietnam. Breakfast featured powdered milk, powdered eggs, canned bacon, canned fruit, canned bread, and real coffee. Prepared by local help who last washed when they followed a pooping water buffalo through a rice paddy. The high point was monkey noodle so...

Re: MRE Menu #4 (2013-2015?)

In your first photo, I see the imprinted date in the bottom edge, as usual. Sopakco and Ameriqual both use this date location, but Wornick doesn't date the outer package. You have pretty much summed up all MREs: slightly weird flavors due to massive preservative content, heavy on the carb content, a...

Re: MRE 2018 Menus

My taste buds imagine a slab of snack bread smeared with "boyardee" sauce and some white MRE cheese whiz. With paste formed "pepperoni" disks.

And my taste buds are not amused.

Re: MRE 2018 Menus

I think if and when pizza finally appears in an MRE, it will be a big disappointment to any of us. To some soldier 100 miles from a pizza joint, it will certainly be the best pizza within 100 miles. But no better.

Re: Suggestions on Vegetarian MREs.

That's odd. I always rated them Sopakco, Wornick, and then Ameriqual in order of quality/flavor/etc. But tastes vary. Pipples is pipples, as they say!

Re: Suggestions on Vegetarian MREs.

Yup. Despite the somewhat odd name, the VTP is a really good one. I think it takes a lot like Chili Mac, but vegetarian. I've told this before, but at my commissary, when the racks run a bit low of TOTM meals, the ones left are invariably VTP. I don't know if it's the Vegetarian in the name or the o...

Re: Beef Steak With Gravy....and Botulism

Doesn't look (or probably smell) much different than when it was new, to be honest. Four lard hockey pucks? Check. Smell and taste like the can? Check. Look like dog food? Check.

The thing about MCIs was that the name was the most appetizing part. That didn't change with many MREs, actually.

Re: Suggestions on Vegetarian MREs.

I think the veggie MREs are tastier than the meaty ones. It could be due to fewer chemical preservatives, or just the producers trying harder. Either way, they ARE better tasting. I really liked the ratatouille, but now that it's gone, the mac and tomato is equally good - if not even better. It is n...
