Re: MRE Safe Eating Tips

Unless they were stored someplace hot or otherwise treated very badly, I doubt you'll find any problems with MREs that new. If you've never had one, you might at first be put off by what is commonly known as "that MRE taste" in the entrees. That's due to all the preservatives - which also are what k...

Re: MRE Menu #9 Beef Stew Insp. Date 2020

I long ago called it the "Dinty MRE" as a pun. It is identical to a canned beef stew product from the Dinty Moore company here in the US, and it's very popular. That's why it is one MRE menu that has been in the lineup since the very beginning and will likely never be taken off the list. It is fasci...

Re: Clear plastic bag inside tan pouches?

Ameriqual has packed them like that for several years now. I think it's an "over and above" step that they take - in excess of the requirements, that is. It does improve the chances for preservation and water resistance in the event the outer bag gets punctured. That's a good thing. AND it provides ...

Re: MRE Menu #24 Southwest Beef and Black Beans Insp. Date 2019

If you were disappointed by that menu, you're going to be really bummed by the other 23. Because many people think the SW Beef is THE best one. It may only be that you have an "Austrian palate" and aren't attuned to US taste preferences. No need to apologize for your English, it's far better than my...

Re: US Mre

They sell MREs on military bases, at the Commissary (grocery store) but you have to be in the military or retired to shop there.

It is in fact illegal to sell them commercially. I don't think they've ever prosecuted a single case of it, so that's why people take the risk.

Re: College-grade MREs

I can't help here. I commuted to college, a half-hour each way. I ate at home or wherever I could. I also carried 16 to 18 credit hours a semester, and worked 20 hours a week to help pay my tuition. And all that was a half century ago.

Re: Has the military ever considered giving soldiers the astronaut ice cream

Spike, it may amuse you to learn that even astronauts don't get "astronaut ice cream." It's actually a gimmick originally sold in various museum gift shops (and now elsewhere) but it hasn't been on the spacefood menu in a long time. (They tried it, and it just doesn't taste good in space. Foods tast...
