Re: Aircrew Build to Order Meal Module

I spent twenty years flying for the Navy. The only time we ever got MREs for flights is when we staged out of USAF bases. When flying from naval air stations or naval air facilities we typically got "box lunches" that were made up more-or-less fresh from the base galley. I say "more or less fresh" b...

Re: I wished I lived closer to Natick... :(

Hello everybody. If you're located within driving range of the Army's Natick Labs you may still be able to participate in the 21 day MRE consumption study. I believe that they are going to be collecting test subjects for several more weeks. You can contact the study team directly at usarmy.usariem.s...

Re: Does anybody have any pictures of 1979 dated MRE's?

My all-time favorite MRE entree was the tiny meatballs mixed with rice and barbeque sauce from that period. I couldn't get enough of those things.

Re: MRE Cherry Nut Cake Successfully Replicated!

Baking and selling would not be worth my time. However, vacuum packing using a home vacuum sealer might be the way to compress the home-baked cakes a bit and make them more dense, as the originals were.

Re: MRE Cherry Nut Cake Successfully Replicated!

I'd be very interested in knowing how this works out when baked in tinfoil, or some other method that replicates the way the originals were baked within the retort pouch. I want to reiterate that despite the different texture (my reproduction is not as "dense" as the original) the taste appeared ide...

Re: Cherry Nut Cake Question

Check out my posting from early this morning. I tested the Natick Labs MRE cherry nut cake recipe and it worked pretty well.

Re: MRE Cherry Nut Cake Successfully Replicated!

I typed the original post very early in the morning (could not sleep) and missed the last two steps (e and f). This has been corrected in the recipe presented above. Sorry!

Re: Eating some CHERRY NUT CAKE DoP 1981 under a big oak tre

For comparison purposes, here's the MRE cherry nut cake my wife and I cooked up last night using the original recipe provided by the US Army Natick Labs:

See the separate posting for the recipe and baking instructions. It does not look the same, but it sure tasted the same.

MRE Cherry Nut Cake Successfully Replicated!

I spent twenty years in the USN/USNR as a non-acoustic sensor operator on Lockheed P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft. During the mid to late 1990s I flew a lot of counter-narcotics missions staged from Howard AFB in Panama, where flight crews had the option of obtaining MREs from the USAF flight ki...

Re: Cherry Nut Cake Question

I haven't tried the recipe yet. I have it broken down into what I think will make about two pounds of batter. I'm going to go with pecans because that's what I seem to remember. The only thing holding me back right now is I need to find an inexpensive digital kitchen scale that can measure in fracti...
