Yup... that was the same person who did the photos.

Personally, I think they should have kept some of the packaging, or at least staged it more appealing. For example, the RCIR has so much more food than what is pictured. They only showed one meal from the Norwegian pack.
I also liked how they added the skittles to menu 2. Looks like 2009 version?

Re: check this,10 in one ration pictures

The war ended here at 4. may 1945.. in my region (Eindhoven) it already ended at the 18th of september, 1944..
We didn't starve, and everybody worked for the DAF truck / trailer factory or for Philips (lamps, radios, knijpkat (squashlight without batteries), fieldphones etc) all in german hands.
Wages were normal.. nothing was wrong, untill someone decided to liberate us.

Actually, in Eindhoven nothing happened during the invasion. Only when we were occupied, the resistance blew some stuff up, our factories (it's an industrial city with an military airport) and railroads got bombed by our "saviours". After we were liberated, the Germans decided to bomb Eindhoven. Well, after all that, nothing was left.

The same with the rest of southern Netherlands.. everything got blewn to pieces, military, industrial, civil.. it doesn't matter. Even blue-blue situations were quite common.
They even stopped the attack of the XXX th Armouredcorps with american antitank mines.. laid down by US paras...

In the North, the Germans got bombed/shelled as hell, but everyone knows.. bombing trenchlines and foxholes only has little effect (only direct hits work..)
The big cities in the west weren't liberated.. but got starved because the Germans stopped supplies from the east and south, to retaliate on the resistance and allied attacks.

Near Rotterdam they had the fooddroparea "Terbregge" and made a pact with the Germans: We only supply food, and don't come over a certain line (in the case the great rivers) and you guys don't shoot at us.
But, the germans didn't supply vehicles to the Dutch. That is why there was a line of aprox. 4000 people to move the rations into the city.
In total there were 11 000 tons of food and supplies dropped, the RAF bombercommand did 3100 sorties, the USAAF 2200 sorties. The sorties consisted out of 60 to 400 bombers.
The swedish also delivered wheatflower with ships. Which did alot more then the airplanes (ships carry more bulk..) so it would be better if the brits did the same.

At the moment I can't find any feedback on the parachute cannisters during Manna/Chowhound, only on the bombers without parachutes on the cargo. Also, only the RAF bombercommand dropped the 10-in-1 boxes. The USAAF dropped 800 tons (!) of K rations.
The boxes from the bombers were dropped at altitudes of 120m to 150m (390ft to 490ft), with an speed of about 150-200 kmh (100 to 130 mph) to stay in the air.
There are situations known of rations smacking through the rooftop, and the (wooden) floor underneeth, ending up in bedrooms.
On all occasions, the RAF mosquitos marked dropzones for the bombers, but mostly as close to the big cities as possible. Lifestock was just collatoral damage, because the fields needed to be used as dropzones.

Re: check this,10 in one ration pictures

Well I was surprised at this bit of info, I had never heard of this before even when studying European history during that time. I'm glad at least the USAAF and the Allies had something in mind even if it was rather dangerous.

BB, I couldn't help thinking why the Allies never did drop the D or K rations? Yes, they were light and had the same calorie intake as the C-ration but much more portable. 10 in 1 just seems like overkill to me unless somehow-somebody thought the 10 in 1 or 5 in 1 was better suited for survivability long term? I can't imagine coming out one day to get the paper, looking up at the sky to see what the weather is and having get hit in the head with a cardboard box of food. To me that would not be the way to go.

MREs vs. Dehydrated vs Food Bars: Who has the best?

housil wrote:The biggest disadvantage of Mountain House over here is: Not available...

Btw, thanks for the excellent pics and I'm in the same boat..you're telling me how good it is.. and I can't get quantity.

The other thing I (think I) know is about European food processing standards for this type of product. I used to handle food processing pumps and was always amazed (and impressed) that manufacturers were often basically trying to design around your higher standards because few here fought for what Europeans considered (rightly) important in areas like Clean In Place (C.I.P).

In other words...only 'the best' will do for me when it comes to reputable manufacturers; as a lot of us out there have dealt directly with the other side of a coin that is simply not acceptable.

2 people for a year(something like 57 cases)...almost 10 grand...you betcha!

Do you think that a similar package could ever be sold that simply included an equal sampling of the original topic?

Eating less than desirable food over a long period of time would be made easier for me knowing that I was eating the best example in each category while always having the option to mix it up a bit.

Thanks, Treesuit.

I very much appreciate the people who have taken the time to respond to my range of questions here on this forum and hope to return the favor some day as well. We're still very interested in any further opinions on the topic and will be making some decisions soon on 'sticking with the (consensus) best' in these categories.

Again, I very much respect your opinions and you've all certainly helped us out a lot with some big deal stuff whether you realize it or not.

Any recent reviews, for 'Biscuit'? It's simple, I like the wording. Just "Biscuit". I tryed one, early '09 packed. Needs butter.

Re: check this,10 in one ration pictures

Thanks C, impossible times that people had to live through. The tragedy of a civilian getting killed by a ration drop on the last day of the war is hard to get your head around.

We have it all so easy now.

Dropping 20kg cases of 10 in 1 at 500 feet sounds terrifying. That would smash through a roof like a bomb. Why not millions of K and D rations? They had 100s of millions in store, especially the D. The K weighed a .5 kilo and the D just over 130 grams.
D and K had been airdropped before, and fired by artillery shell during the Mortain counterattack in august, and Bastoigne, but 10 in 1s no.

Yes, Housil is right. DryTech is very good and offers a lot in the form of calories and does have some variety. Mountain House is right up there are well. Lucky for us here in the states we have in in abundance. If you want to you could contact Housil, Norge or some of the other European memebers and see if they could send you a DryTech ration. DryTech is pretty standard for some of the armed forces over there.
